Your Mimosa may start soon to go into preflower, for now there no pistils or white hairs showing yet ,instead of chopping of leaves try to bend them or tuck them ,you can chop few that cover bud sites ,but not in one go to avoid stress her even more.I would do 1-2 leaves a day others tuck and bend.

I do NOT "defoliate". The plant gets it's energy from the leaves. Less leaves = less energy = less buds. If the plant is short I will sparingly remove very low annoying leaves that make watering difficult. In flower I will remove leaves that are really shading bud sites where tucking doesn't work. And I'll remove leaves from the very bottom that are heavily shaded. But, I don't remove leaves if I can help it. Even leaves at the bottom in the shade are a source of nutrients for the upper parts of the plant and they serve as an early warning for nutrition problems as they will show mobile nutrient deficiencies first.
